12/28/2023 0 Comments Astria ascending ulanThere are also some side quests and puzzles in addition to the main quest. Probably because it works pretty well all the time, but in the case of Astria Ascending, it ends up being a bit clichéd and crunchy. In terms of story, it is nothing out of the ordinary either, it is very cliché and in short, it is again some stereotypical villain who wants to destroy the world as we know it for his own selfish reasons. It’s a bit in the Jar-Jar Binks direction and that really says it all you need to know. Several of the voice actors sound as if they are reading inside at best and the creatures grunting and in some cases moaning lines or sounds, we should not even talk about, it is almost embarrassingly bad. Maybe it’s because of the already thin script and dialogue, maybe it’s the rigid and sometimes downright bad voice acting or maybe it’s a combination of these factors that makes it feel that way. The characters are nicely designed and I like the concept with these demi-gods basically, but it unfortunately falls pretty flat as I think they completely lack personality and charisma. Astria Ascending is a very nice game but unfortunately it does not really hold up in other respects. However, the combat system deserves its fair share of praise as it is really well designed, it feels clear from the start and it is very easy to get into it all and start fighting. I do not necessarily mind high difficulty initially, I am a fairly used Dark Souls player but it quickly becomes quite frustrating to have to start over again, especially with the turn-based approach that already feels tough and uninspired. The level of difficulty also feels very unbalanced as several of the enemies and especially bosses you encounter early in the game are considerably stronger than your gang of demi-gods. It is very abrasive and stinking and it does not take very long before you get tired of it. It is also possible to use only four of them at the same time in battle, but it feels perfectly reasonable, it would have been a bit messy with all eight who will take turns attacking. It is, as previously mentioned, turn-based and even if you have eight characters at your disposal with different characteristics, it gets pretty repetitive fairly quickly. It is also with Zodiac Ring that you open portals and as a small bonus you can also freeze the enemies temporarily and simply skip them if you feel you can not fight. It is completely crowded with them and of course, it is through battles that you accumulate experience points and can strengthen your company of gods, but since the battles are often so incredibly tough and monotonous, it becomes easy to skip more and more when given the opportunity. There is also a lot of platforming which I like and early on you get access to a useful little tool called Zodiac Ring, with this you can unlock new areas and in this way for example find some treasures, lums (currency man deals weapons and other upgrades for) and weapons, but more than anything else in this game you will find enemies. The track design is lovely colorful but unfortunately there is not as much space to explore as I would have liked, it is also quite messy in places and it is quite easy to go wrong. There are a total of 8 playable characters you can use in battle but only 4 can be used at a time.Īstria Ascending is beautiful, it is sometimes even really beautiful. So they are not playable in any other respects of the game, something I can feel is a bit of a shame as it would have been interesting to explore Orchanon with other features and maybe unlock potentially hidden areas that Ulan can not access for example. At one’s disposal is then also her company consisting of eight characters or demi-gods just like Ulan himself, they all have different characteristics and will help in the battles. You get to shoulder the role of Ulan who is the boss of a company of demi-gods and it is also with Ulan that you explore the world, find enemies to fight against and talk to other unplayable characters in the super handsome world. Last in line is Astria Ascending, a new turn-based Japanese role-playing game where one’s task is once again to save the world from evil. 2021 has been a pretty strong year for Japanese role-playing games so far, in addition to Microsoft recently announcing that it will invest heavily in the genre, we have had a lot of really nice titles this year and the chances are very good that 2022 will be even better.
